Room for Dessert: Sweet Treats for Every Occasion

When the sweet tooth comes a-knockin', savour one of these luscious dessert options.

Sweet treats are one of life’s greatest luxuries and come in many forms. We often hear that we need to reduce our sugar intake, but in moderation, it’s perfectly acceptable to indulge once in a while. Besides, what would life be without dessert?

Whether it's for a birthday celebration, an afternoon pick-me-up, or to make life more enjoyable, there are many reasons to give in to the sweet affair. For connoisseurs of desserts, however, it doesn’t matter what occasion or time of year it is. Rather, it is all about feeding the soul with food that makes us feel like we’ve finally found Heaven on Earth.

So, without further ado, let’s begin our journey with these eight leading purveyors of delicious cakes and desserts to suit every preference and occasion.

1. All The Batter — Avocado & Natural Foods

All The Batter — Avocado & Natural Foods recipes are all made using fresh high-quality avocados.

Avocados are a great way to make a dessert that is both healthy and luxurious, and that’s just what
All The Batter is about. They specialise in avocado desserts that satisfy your sweet tooth without the guilt.

Surprise loved ones or treat yourself to its popular Avocado Rhapsody, a handmade cake composed of moist avocado chocolate cake layers and covered in luscious avocado cream. Beautifully handcrafted with fresh avocados, and topped with walnuts and almonds, this non-dairy cake even comes in eggless and gluten-free options.

If you love a little wow factor in your dessert, we recommend their Avocado Strawberry Gateau cake. Covered in dark chocolate and strawberries, the surprise comes when you cut into the cake to reveal a generous mouthful of fresh strawberries sandwiched between two succulent avocado cake layers. The rich creaminess that is inherent in avocados makes this cake a hearty, nutritious and all-natural dessert.

All The Batter started crafting avocado drinks since it was founded in 2014, before expanding their menu to include cakes and other sweet confections from their avocado cafe. So, indulge in its wholesome Sea Salt Avocado smoothie made with fresh avocados, pure sea salt and a little bit of honey for a taste of their beginnings. Full of fibre and healthy fats, avocado makes this smoothie creamy and thick, ideal for a quick on-the-go breakfast or a healthier dessert option in the evenings.

All The Batter — Avocado & Natural Foods is located at Anchorpoint

2. Bengawan Solo

Surprise your in-laws with a box of colourful nonya kuehs from Bengawan Solo.

Delighting in nonya kueh with a lovely cup of tea just brings you a wonderful sense of nostalgia. It’s no surprise that these brightly coloured, elegantly designed and almost architectural delicacies are highly labour-intensive. Fortunately, you can always turn to Bengawan Solo for a smorgasbord of well-made kueh that never disappoints.

Founded by Anastasia Tjendri-Liew in 1979, Bengawan Solo is one of Singapore’s most successful bakery chains, having built its reputation on their high-quality nonya (Peranakan)-style pastries and cakes.

Here are just some of our favourites, starting with ang ku kueh — a sweet and savoury snack made with mung bean filling and wrapped in a soft chewy glutinous rice skin. We also love a good slice of their kueh lapis — composed of fragrant, buttery and slightly spicy layers. Each cake is handmade individually using premium ingredients such as cinnamon, cloves and other aromatic spices. Besides the original kueh lapis, their prune and cranberry versions are equally delectable.

There’s also the coconut-covered ondeh ondeh — bite into these little rice cake balls and discover a burst of pandan and palm sugar filling inside! Finally, indulge in the all-time favourite pandan chiffon — a light fluffy cake made with freshly squeezed pandan juice and coconut milk. Simply irresistible!

Bengawan Solo is located at Anchorpoint, Causeway Point and Northpoint City, North Wing and South Wing.

3. BreadTalk

BreadTalk draws inspiration from the past and imbues its offerings with innovation and creativity.

The cheesecake has evolved quite a bit since it was first invented in ancient Greece. Whether you’re craving a slice of rich New York-style cheesecake or a light, creamier Philadelphia-style cheesecake topped with a bit of fruit, there are loads of options to choose from. So what do you do when the innovative patisserie chefs at BreadTalk give you yet another option of cheesecake? Well, you try it of course!

Known as the Granite (Sesame New York Cheesecake), this artistic, multi-layered work of art is made with 100 percent pure black sesame, black sesame mousse, vanilla chiffon, Oreo black sesame crumbs and a New York cheesecake layer. Rich and fragrant, it’s worth celebrating your cheat day with this mid-week decadence.

Another classic turned modern BreadTalk invention is the Dark Forest Gateau. The Black Forest cake history has many versions. However, the most famous one is that of confectioner Josef Keller’s “Black Forest Cherry”, invented way back in 1915 at his café in Bad Godesberg, Germany.

BreadTalk’s Dark Forest Gateau is darker than the typical Black Forest (hence the name). It has a little booze in its rum-soaked cherries which elevates the 70 percent dark chocolate mousse, while the slight sweetness and sourness of the cherry coulis cuts through layers of vanilla white chocolate cream. To all the cherry-and-chocolate fans out there, BreadTalk’s Dark Forest Gateau is the answer to all of your delicious dark fantasies.

4. Dunkin’ Donuts

Treat yourself or share the joy by bringing people together with a box of Dunkin’ Donuts.

If you’ve ever wondered why people are obsessed with donuts, it’s because donuts are circles of happiness, duh. It's like a never ending sugary path of adventure and every bite makes you feel alive inside.

Which brings us to Dunkin’ Donuts. This highly successful brand is recognised for its amazing selection of incredible tasting donuts. Its website lists more than 20 possible donut flavors, and they always have seasonal specials, so you can bet they'll have exactly what you're craving for.

If you need some cheering up, choose their more playful creations such as Mr. Happy, a banana frosted donut with bavarian kreme, and Strawberry Frosted for its pretty rainbow sprinkles. If you prefer a chocolate-based donut, there’s the Boston Kreme which is chocolate-y and creamy; the Choco-Nut Swirl which features peanut butter, chocolate plus chopped peanuts, and Hazelnutty — a hazelnut-filled chocolate donut dipped in cinnamon sugar.

5. Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart

A cup of afternoon tea with Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart is a sweet treat indeed!

Best enjoyed freshly baked and warm (although, you can also enjoy them chilled or frozen), these tarts will awaken your senses. Not only do they have a pleasant and comforting aroma, they also tingle your taste buds with contrasting tastes and textures.

The cheese tart craze started in the late 2000s or early 2010s in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture and the producer of most of Japan’s local milk and cheese, and quickly spread to neighboring Asian countries. One of many cheese tart bakeries to have hit our shores is the halal Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart, crafting tarts that are mildly sweet with a hint of saltiness, featuring a buttery double-baked crust and fluffy cheese filling that’s to die for.

We recommend getting a gift box of six tarts in a variety of flavours such as its original flavour cheese tart, which features a creamy three-cheese centre and a crunchy shortcrust pastry; its chocolate tart which pairs perfectly with coffee, and its durian tart for the daring few. The durian tart is made with fresh D24 durian pulp, which makes this specialty indulgently velvety. Of course, there are loads more enticing flavours to explore here. From salted egg to cookies and cream, perhaps you’ll be better off grabbing a dozen so you and your friends get to try them all!

Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart is located at Causeway Point and Northpoint City. Available for takeaway and delivery on Frasers Makan Master.

6. Mei Heong Yuen Dessert

Mei Heong Yuen Dessert is famous for its varieties of pastes and other Chinese desserts.

Nutritious and cooling desserts are the cornerstone of Mei Heong Yuen Dessert — a local brand that has roots in the iconic Farmer Brand groundnuts. On a hot day, we recommend the mango with pomelo and sago. This cold dessert is a well balanced combo of naturally sweet and smooth mango puree, crunchy pomelo pulp and chewy sago bits.

For a highly nutritious option, go for the papaya and white fungus. The soup is sweetened by fresh papaya — an excellent source of vitamins and dietary fibre, while the white fungus provides anti-inflammatory and cancer-fighting health benefits. Along with other ingredients such as Chinese almonds, red dates and longan, this dessert is said to be beneficial for blood circulation and complexion too.

Another popular choice is their nourishing sesame paste. Made from blended black sesame seeds, this heart-warming dish can be enjoyed either hot or cold. Don’t be fooled by its humble looks — this dessert is filled with goodies such as antioxidants, calcium, zinc and magnesium, which help to detoxify the body, strengthen bones, regulate blood pressure and even nourish hair. Beyond these benefits, the paste is crafted to just the right silky texture, allowing the fragrant sesame aroma to linger on your taste buds.

Mei Heong Yuen Dessert is located at Northpoint City and The Centrepoint. Available for takeaway and delivery on Frasers Makan Master.

7. Melvados

Satisfy your chocolate cravings with gooey brownies from Melvados.

If you’re hosting a cosy family gathering, you can’t go wrong with brownies, especially when there are kiddos around, and Melvados offers an impressive brownie selection. If you haven’t heard of the brand, it is the retail arm of Foodedge Gourmet which supplies restaurants, five-star hotels, country clubs, and supermarkets with a wide range of halal-certified breads, cakes, pies, brownies, ready-to-eat meals, and even ice cream.

With Melvados’ brownie platter, you can create an impressive dessert centerpiece at home. It comes with 20 pieces of their best-selling items including the classic double chocolate, fudgy black and white, macadamia, cheesy marble and mixed nuts brownies.

Nursing a broken heart? We prescribe a guilt-free dark chocolate brownie with a serving of Mexican vanilla ice cream to soothe the soul, without the fear of piling on too many extra calories. These brownies are made with low-fat cocoa, 72 percent dark Belgian chocolate, and contain 40 percent less sugar, while the Mexican vanilla ice cream is made with vanilla beans imported from Mexico. So go ahead! Eat your pain away without having to worry too much about calories after.

There’s also the S’mores Brownie Set, which is inspired by s’mores — a tasty treat familiar to all campers. You will love these rich belgian chocolate brownies topped with torched marshmallows and crispy graham crackers on top. We suggest heating it up for a super-melty marshmallow surface. Yum!

Melvados is located at Anchorpoint and Eastpoint Mall

into one thrilling multi-textural mix.

If you love jelly, you’ve got to try their Grass Jelly Special. It’s a grass jelly extravaganza topped with aloe vera pearl jelly, black sugar jelly, taro balls and a milk ball for a hint of creaminess! For a more traditional option, the Nine Fresh Signature features both beancurd and grass jelly. It’s filled with red, green and pinto beans, peanuts and taro balls which gives you a satisfying balance of crunchy and chewy in every bite. Or, go fruit-crazy with their Fruity Ai-Yu Jelly, which has an ai-yu jelly base made from fig fruit seeds.
